Account-by-account review Documentation guidance No deletion guarantees
Collections and charge-offs are not the same
A charge-off generally means an original creditor classified a debt as a loss for accounting purposes. A collection account may appear when a debt is assigned or sold to a collection company. Depending on the circumstances, both the original account and a collection account may appear on a report.
The appearance of two related accounts does not automatically mean the reporting is incorrect. The balances, ownership, dates, statuses, and other details must be reviewed carefully.
Common reporting details worth reviewing
Before sending a dispute, compare the information across your credit reports and any statements or letters you have received. A clear dispute focuses on a specific factual concern rather than using a generic request.
An account that does not belong to you
A duplicated account or balance
Incorrect dates, payment history, or account status
A balance that does not reflect documented updates
Information that cannot be verified after a proper investigation
What happens after a dispute is submitted?
The credit bureau generally contacts the company furnishing the information and reviews the response. The account may be verified, corrected, updated, or deleted depending on the investigation and available records.
A deletion is never guaranteed. If the information is accurate and verifiable, it may remain until the applicable reporting period expires. We help clients keep documents organized and understand the result they receive.
Disputing is different from resolving a debt
Correcting inaccurate credit reporting does not necessarily eliminate an underlying debt. Settlement, repayment, validation, and credit reporting involve different considerations. Depending on your situation, you may wish to consult a qualified attorney or financial professional for legal or debt-resolution advice.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What to know before getting started.
Can a paid collection still appear on a credit report?+
It can. Payment may update the balance or status, but it does not automatically require deletion. The reporting must still be accurate and comply with applicable law.
Does a charge-off mean I no longer owe the debt?+
Not necessarily. A charge-off is an accounting status and does not automatically cancel the obligation.
Can OAS guarantee that a collection will be deleted?+
No. No legitimate service can guarantee a particular deletion or score result. Outcomes depend on the facts, documentation, and investigation.
